Adultery on the Increase

by Andrew Krajewski » Tue Feb 10, 2015 4:07 pm

Ashley Madison, with a tag line of 'Life is too short. Have an affair' is a website
that specialises in arranging extramarital affairs
They operate in 45 countries and have 32 million members.

Their membership is rising
particularly in Western cultures with the UK leading the pack
and all this
despite free dating apps such as Trinder with 30 million registered users.

I neither condone nor condemn adultery
but I do wonder
what on earth is going on?
and how it will all end.

I have a very strong feeling
that people are looking for satisfaction in the wrong place.

There are certainly a number of social changes underway, which in my opinion appear to be heavily influenced by economic factors, amongst other things...

On the one hand, the younger generations are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain mortgages or even sustain a living as a tenant, thus multi-generational households are on the increase once again.

On the flip-side, there's another growing trend that I've come across which is the concept that men are less interested in marrying. Two of the underlying reasons seems to again connect to economic forces / threats as a consequence of divorce and emotional confusion as regard to "What Women Really Want". Google MGTOW and enter a whole new paradigm!

Maybe we as a species are not wired to be monogamous, and religion has played its part in promoting the concept of the nuclear family, which clearly has its benefits.

Your point around spirituality strikes a chord with me, and I believe many are looking for happiness and meaning in the "wrong" areas. In my experience, happiness is about the journey, and less about the what, or who, you have.

Like you, I'm not judging which is right or wrong. I'm certainly curious to see the state of affairs (pun fully intended) with regard to inter-personal adult relationships over the coming years.

Just a quick view on the point of men of the younger generation being less interested in marriage. I can indeed confirm that the theory also extends to women, who are certainly more career minded and less family minded than ever before... Smaller families of only 1 child or less is the norm amongst all of my friends, with all the women I know choosing to stop at one child, which leads to a much larger problem than just adultery, but more so a decreasing (Western) population as we are not even sustaining ourselves never mind growing! The demographic of the Western world will be much changed in the next 20 years plus....
